Exploring Chinatown and Its Historic Neighbourhoods

South Bridge Road
South Bridge Road is home to three significant religious landmarks: Sri Mariamman Temple, Jamae Mosque and Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum. Together, these landmarks reflect the diverse cultural and religious heritage that has shaped Chinatown over the years. Each site has its own history and architectural character, making South Bridge Road an important part of Singapore’s heritage landscape.

Kreta Ayer
The Kreta Ayer area is one of the historic neighbourhoods within Chinatown. The name “Kreta Ayer” translates to “water cart” in Malay and refers to the bullock-drawn water carts that once transported water. Today, Kreta Ayer is a lively area with a mix of heritage attractions, traditional businesses, restaurants and cultural experiences. Chinatown Food Street is one of the neighbourhood’s popular destinations, offering a range of local Singaporean and Chinese dishes.

Pagoda Street
Historically, Pagoda Street was associated with the coolie trade and opium dens that were part of Chinatown’s early development. Today, the street has been transformed into a pedestrian-friendly heritage area lined with conserved, colourful shophouses. These buildings now accommodate boutiques, souvenir shops, cafés, restaurants and other businesses.

Ann Siang Hill
The area has undergone several name changes throughout its history. It was originally known as Scott’s Hill, after Charles Scott, who cultivated nutmeg and clove on the hill. After the land was sold to John Gemmill, it became known as Gemmill’s Hill. The area was later named Ann Siang Hill after Chia Ann Siang, a wealthy Chinese businessman who acquired the land and established his residence and estate there. Today, Ann Siang Hill is known for its conserved shophouses, independent boutiques, cafés, restaurants, and bars.
