Discover Bugis: Singapore’s Historic and Cultural District

The Bugis neighbourhood stands as a powerful testament to the nation’s rich history while simultaneously buzzing with the energy of its modern aspirations. It is a vibrant district where iconic landmarks tell stories of the past, and contemporary life flourishes amidst grand colonial architecture.

At the very core of Bugis, lies the historic City Hall building. Once the seat of government and the very place where Singapore declared its independence, this majestic structure, now part of the National Gallery Singapore, emanates an aura of profound significance. It is now a world-class institution showcasing Southeast Asian art. Just a short walk away, the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay beckons. Affectionately known as “the Durian” due to its spiky facade, this performing arts center is a hub of cultural activity, hosting everything from concerts and ballets to theatrical performances and free outdoor shows.

And just across the road from the National Gallery lies CHIJMES, a beautifully preserved former convent complex that now houses a delightful array of restaurants, bars, and event spaces. Its stunning Gothic chapel and serene courtyards offer a tranquil escape and a captivating glimpse into Singapore’s past, all while providing a lively spot for an evening out.
