The Neighbourhood

The Quays is a riverside neighbourhood area along the Singapore River comprising Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and River Valley.

Boat Quay: Singapore’s Historic Shipping District
Boat Quay is a historic riverside neighbourhood located on the southern bank of the Singapore River. It was once part of Singapore’s old port and became an important centre for shipping and trade during the 19th century.

During its peak in the 1860s, Boat Quay served many of Singapore’s shipping businesses. Chinese traders considered the southern bank of the Singapore River to resemble the belly of a carp, or Li Yu. The shape was regarded as an auspicious symbol associated with prosperity.

By 1852, approximately three quarters of Singapore’s shipping activities were conducted at Boat Quay, making it one of the most important commercial areas in Singapore at the time.

Clarke Quay: Singapore River’s Historic Trading Hub
Located further north along the Singapore River, Clarke Quay was another important centre for trade and trans-shipment during Singapore’s early history. The shophouses surrounding Clarke Quay originally served both residential and commercial purposes. The buildings were typically two to three storeys high. Shops and trading businesses occupied the ground floors, while coolies and working-class families often lived on the upper floors.

Clarke Quay was also an important cultural and entertainment area. Chinese opera performances and street storytelling were once held in the neighbourhood.

River Valley: Residential Neighbourhood Along the Singapore River
Some of Singapore’s early entrepôt trade buildings were established around Robertson Quay, and the surrounding River Valley district also became a desirable residential area because of its proximity to the city and the Singapore River.

Wealthy European and Chinese merchants built homes in the area as they sought to live away from the increasingly crowded commercial districts around the river and port.

Today, River Valley combines historic architecture with modern residential and lifestyle developments. The area features luxury condominiums, conserved shophouses and a wide selection of restaurants along the Singapore River.
